NCPDP is a standards organization. We provide a place for industry representatives to come together to solve problems, specifically in the pharmacy services and electronic prescribing sectors. We build the technical specifications for the messages to pass between computers.
NCPDP receives its funding from membership. With NCPDP yearly membership, you receive all the documents NCPDP publishes. So in eprescribing, there is the SCRIPT Standard used for the eprescribing functions (new prescriptions, refills, medication history, etc), the Formulary and Benefit Standard (for obtaining formulary information from payers for loading into the prescribing system), along with the data dictionary and external code list (values or references to industry vocabularies). You can pull these documents down from the website, and/or receive a CD.
You can pull any updates to the documents within this year (if we add enhancements to the standards based on industry requests). You also have access to attend the quarterly work group meetings free of charge, and the annual conference and educational programs at member rates. Membership information is available at You can join online on this page. SCRIPT supports an XML format and the schemas would be available for download as a member. We have an eprescribing page that might be of interest On this page under NCPDP Resources is an NCPDP ePrescribing Standards 101 presentation with helpful information about implementing SCRIPT 10.6 and Formulary and Benefit Standard. Please make use of the other resources on this page as well. Work Group 11 ePrescribing and Related Transactions is one of our work groups focused on solving needs for the eprescribing industry.
Information about the work groups is on If you are involved in long term care environments, Work Group 14 Long Term Care is actively involved in solving needs for this sector. We also have task groups that are welcome to any interested party (member or non-member) that work on specific industry problems via conference call in between quarterly work group meetings General information about NCPDP and its processes is available at We would also encourage you to consider either being a sponsor or an exhibitor at the Annual Conference.
